要達到 VR 的效果，必須提供視覺、聽覺、互動、以及其他感官的模擬元素，上述項目做得越好，虛擬環境越「以假亂真」，使用者也更容易「信以為真」。

「虛擬實境」 (Virtual Reality, VR) 利用電腦技術模擬出一個立體、高擬真的 3D 空間，當使用者穿戴特殊顯示裝置 (VR 眼鏡) 進入後，會 產生好像處在現實中一般的錯覺 。在這空間中，操作者可以藉由控制器或鍵盤在這個虛擬的環境下穿梭或互動!

VR 虛擬實境也可以用在軍事、醫療、體育等產業，可以加強訓練，降低不必要的風險。

我們通常將這種「信以為真」的感覺稱做「沉浸式體驗」；越優秀的 VR 效果，其提供的「沉浸式體驗」更佳。

VR 虛擬實境的視覺與聽覺體驗 這些裝置裡面有兩個畫面分別對應左右眼,來模擬人眼的視差，當使用者戴上 VR 顯示器後，就可以獲得逼真的立體感與空間感，搭配環繞感明確的音源與耳機，使用者無論看到的、聽到的都是來自虛擬環境的感官刺激，自然就會感覺好像真的置身其中。

VR 裝置的互動類型，目前的主流大概有三種：「體感」、「控制器」、「動態偵測」。

「體感」 主要是透過重力感測器或陀螺儀，判斷使用者的各種動作 「控制器」 手持控制器除了內建各種體感元件，來判斷使用者的動作，通常也會有一些按鍵來進行輔助。

「動態偵測」 就是為了擷取包含姿勢、移動等更大的動作，其可分為兩大類型 第一種是在使用者身上穿戴各種感應器（例如 3D 動畫電影常用的動態捕捉技術） 第二種是透過外部的定位裝置進行判斷（例如 HTC Vive、微軟 Kinect 等，均屬此類）

犯罪現場重建 瑞士蘇黎世大學的專家們表示，虛擬實境的頭戴顯示器（Oculus Rift headsets）可以使用在刑事案件的犯罪現場重現，以及在審判時做為輔助性的說明。

近年來，犯罪現場開始部署高科技設備，能更精確地記錄犯罪現場的資訊。利用資訊匯整出 3D 的模擬犯罪現場。3D 模擬的技術，會比在平面上模擬更加精確、提供更多線索。

減輕疼痛 以美國聖地牙哥為基地的新創公司 DreamStream VR，使用近期推出的虛擬實境頭戴顯示器（Oculus Rift headsets），提供使用者減輕疼痛的服務。

根據 DreamStream VR 的官方網站表示，過去十年中許多調查和臨床研究顯示，虛擬實境可以讓病患有效減輕疼痛、舒解壓力，而且虛擬實境的緩解方式是相較於傳統更安全的方法。因為使用虛擬實境減輕疼痛，不會出現上癮、依賴等副作用。

虛擬實境新聞 以美國加州為基地的 Emblematic Group，使用虛擬實境，讓使用者在虛擬的世界中看見、體驗真實世界中發生的事件。例如：看見古巴關塔那摩灣受侵害的人權事件、敘利亞的戰爭，以及美國的遊民現況。這樣的呈現方式可以讓讀者身歷其境，有更多的感觸，而非只是從報紙上得知他們的消息。

虛擬工作室 在冰島雷克雅維克的新創公司 BreakRoom，希望使用者能在自己喜歡的環境中工作，因此使用虛擬實境技術創造一個虛擬辦公桌，讓使用者可以自行選擇喜歡的工作背景、音樂，降低使用者在工作上的壓力。

VR 虛擬實境應用於商業也有許多想像空間，例如虛擬店面、虛擬辦公室、虛擬導覽等。

製造業 英國的 Virtalis 公司，使用虛擬實境，讓製造業者能給員工看見將要生產的產品，或是預期建設建築的樣貌，例如：潛水艇或是新的公寓大樓。現今已有許多公司，例如 Leyland Trucks 和 Rolls Royce，都使用虛擬實境系統來增加製造物品的品質、減少誤差。

教育 線上教學平台 Unimersiv，提供大量虛擬實境教學內容。他們使用虛擬實境的頭戴顯示器（Oculus Rift或是Samsung Gear Headsets），讓學生無論在什麼科目，都能身歷其境的體驗。例如：讓學生在羅馬競技場中散步、搭乘太空梭探索銀河系等，Unimersiv 讓所有課程都變得生動活潑。

影視產業也很有可能陸續導入 VR 製作，目前已經有一些使用全角度拍攝的 MV 或節目出現。

大數據管理 贏得今年的大數據虛擬現實境挑戰的 Pie 與 Lumacode，讓使用者透過虛擬實境頭戴顯示器，來操控大數據系統。使用者可以直接用手「點」、「抓」、「移動」來簡單移動這些數據。

「混合實境」 (Mixed Reality,MR) 把現實世界與虛擬世界合併在一起，從而建立出一個新的環境以及符合一般視覺上所認知的虛擬影像，在這之中現實世界中的物件能夠與數位世界中的物件共同存在並且即時的產生互動。

介於 AR 與 VR 之間的一種綜合狀態。 MR 綜合實境的則是將虛擬的場景與現實進行更高程度的結合。

具體的實例像是 Microsoft HoloLens，使用者可以透過半透明的顯示器看到真實的世界，但畫面中也會有許多人造的 3D 影像，創造一種似真似假、有真有假、亦真亦假使用體驗。

擴增實境 ( Augmented Reality, AR) 一種將虛擬資訊擴增到現實空間中的技術， 它不是要取代現實空間，而是在現實空間中添加一個虛擬物件 ，藉由攝影機的辨識技術與電腦程式的結合，當設定好的圖片出現在鏡頭裡面，就會出現對應的虛擬物件。

如果說 VR 的目標是讓使用者完全脫離現實，進入虛擬的空間，AR 就是將現實的空間加入一些虛擬的物件，而使用者基本上還是存在於真實的世界。

AR 是這三種實境技術中最早開始廣為應用在行銷、廣告業中，AR 遊戲最大的不同點是: 虛擬的內容和互動仍止於虛擬之 中，但可以透過營幕等輔助裝置的呈現讓你看到虛擬和真實世界的結合狀態。近期最有名的遊戲案例則是 神奇寶貝 GO 。

AR 的應用其實很廣泛，尤其是與智慧型手機的結合案例不勝枚舉，像是一些手遊（如 One Piece ARCarddass Formation）、玩具（如 Kazooloo Vortex），或是拍照 App（如 Sony Xperia 手機的「AR 效果」拍攝模式），都運用了 AR 的技術。

AR 在遊戲以外的應用常見於地圖軟體，將虛擬的行車指示，與手機相機取得的畫面疊合，提供更直觀的導航體驗。
