I don't think the government should have the right to tell people what they can or cannot take so I don't have any issue with people doing whatever they want. If you want to smoke crack all day, go for it. Just don't ruin the cities and do it in public. People should not be camping outside in front of businesses or smoking crack in the open. You want to do it privately, go for it. But we should have laws that don't allow people who don't even have the decency to do it in private, clean up their crap or ruin businesses or cities. I simply don't understand how European cities can decriminalize all drug use and they don't have these problems. But here in America, people don't even have the basic decency to do these things privately or clean up after themselves. Trying to make drug use criminal will never work. It costs $100,000 a year to house someone who breaks drug laws and it doesn't stop people anyway.

The problem is that people don't realize that 51% of the prison population is in for non-violent crimes (IE. drug dealing, use, etc) and it's financially unsustainable. The US has the largest prison population of the 2-5th largest countries combined. We have a bigger prison population than China - a communist country! The US wastes tons of money funding police, the DEA and other agencies that try to stop this unstoppable crime. People are always going to do drugs no matter what you do. Selling drugs is too profitable so people are always going to sell them thus we have cartels more powerful than governments. If you make drugs legal, you take away the profit, make them safer and get rid of all this money wasted on policing, prison etc.People hate the police because they are sick of being over-policed. Portugal was in the same situation as the US in the 90s with over 5% of the population using Heroin. They decriminalized all drugs and moved the money from policing to rehab and prevention and overdose deaths went from tens of thousands a year down to 5-10 a year. Use went down from 5% of the population to less than .05% because people in the shadows got help. The US can keep doing what we are doing but you will continue to get the same results from this "war on drugs" since the 70s. Same actions same results.
